Vendor Fair, Beach Clean-up Highlight Sustainability Weekend

Fun events include an upcycled fashion show, gardening, biking and goat therapy

Students sang, planted in a community garden, cleaned up a beach and learned to make cashmere sweaters during a busy Sustainability Community Weekend leading up to Earth Day 2024.

Sustainability Coordinator Katie Cooper enlisted faculty, staff, students and local vendors to start a wide-ranging conversation about how everyone can best protect and celebrate the world around us.

“Cheshire Academy’s Sustainability Community Weekend encourages students to consider the impact of their everyday decisions, from the trash they produce to the clothes they wear to the food they consume,” Cooper said. “These everyday decisions not only have an impact on the environment in which we live, but on those we share this world with; we are all one extended global family.”

The weekend featured various activities, including performances by CA musical groups and a Sustainability Fair with vendors selling Earth-friendly jewelry, pottery, soaps, and ice cream. Students volunteered with a dog rescue and traveled to New Haven to join a Save the Sound beach clean-up that removed tons of refuse from the shoreline.

On Saturday, April 20, students participated in morning workshops on a range of topics from fishing, biking and hiking to thrifting, crafting, cashmere production, and sweater making. Other weekend events included a special lunch provided by FLIK, community competitions, an upcycled fashion show, goat therapy courtesy of Bradley Mountain Farm and free ice cream treats from Sweet Claude’s.
