Dr. Alex Conaway discusses how team sports provide an authentic building ground for resilience, perspective, other key life skills
Dr. Alex Conaway, Cheshire Academy’s associate dean of students for school culture and belonging, explained how athletics build stronger students, healthier communities, and brighter futures in “More Than A Game,” a guest essay in the Autumn 2026 issue of Southington Magazine.
“Sports has a unique power to bring people together, build character, and open doors far beyond the playing field,” Dr. Conaway wrote. “That’s what I hope today’s student-athletes take with them. The game eventually ends. The relationships, confidence, discipline, and perspective don’t. That’s the scoreboard that matters.”
In an editor’s note, magazine Editor Roger Dietz said he usually focuses his magazine stories on Southington, but he broke with tradition after meeting Dr. Conaway.
“I feel his message to local sports teams and coaches is something we should pay attention to,” he wrote.
A former Cheshire Academy basketball coach, Dr. Conaway co-founded All Access Training & Student-Athlete Development, Inc. to address a lack of resources for young people in his hometown of New Haven, CT. He holds a Doctor of Education in Global Sports Leadership from East Tennessee State University.
At Cheshire Academy, students participate in a competitive team sport for two of the three seasons of every academic year as part of an afternoon program. Athletics is an important priority because it encourages all students to take pride in contributing to something bigger than themselves. Students not only build new relationships with classmates, they learn how to work as a team and support one another, and they continue to be lifelong learners through these afternoon activities.
