Woelper weighs in on “How Adaptive Learning Changes Teaching Without Replacing It”
Cheshire Academy Head of School Tom Woelper discussed how students can develop independent thinking skills with the help of AI, while still maintaining the crucial connection, guidance, and encouragement from teachers on the national podcast “The Brighter Side of Education.”
Woelper discussed the evolving role of teaching in an AI world with Dr. Lisa Hassler, host of the podcast that offers innovative solutions to education challenges for both teachers and families.
Asked about school models that use adaptive technology for core academic education, such as the Alpha Schools opening across the U.S., Woelper said these models can offer highly personalized learning experiences.
While it would be ideal for each student to learn from their own personalized tutor, that situation is not possible in most school settings. That’s where adaptive technology can play a role, Woelper said.
“That’s what I think the exciting promise is… the personalization of education for each student,” he said. “You don’t want to lose sight of the fact that this is a tool that I think can be most effective when used well with a teacher.”
Woelper has more than 30 years of experience in independent schools, having served at Groton, Taft, and Hotchkiss. He was the founding head of New England Innovation Academy. He has long been a proponent of teacher’s important role helping students develop the judgment and independence they need in a world increasingly shaped by AI.
And there’s good news for teachers: “The Brighter Side of Learning” episodes earn educators professional development credit as part of a recognized Continuing Professional Development (CPD) pathway.
