Practice tests, mock interviews help boost confidence and skills
Cheshire Academy held its annual College Workshop Day on Wednesday, Oct. 9, as sophomores took practice PSATs, juniors sat for the actual PSAT, and faculty worked one on one with seniors and postgraduate students to complete their college applications and polish exceptional essays and interview skills.
“I love the fact that the entire community — 9th grade through PG, faculty and staff – are engaged with each other, supporting each other through some important college milestones,” said Madeleine Bergstrom, director of College Counseling. “For our 10th and 11th graders, to be able to practice a standardized test in a familiar and comfortable environment goes a long way in easing some of the anxiety surrounding the tests. And our 12th graders and postgraduates walk away with a comprehensive checklist of the last few items they need to complete applications before early deadlines.”
The day is part of Cheshire’s comprehensive, four-year focus on providing students with superb guidance as they discover, hone down, and apply to colleges and universities that are ‘right fit’ schools for their unique strengths, interests, and future goals. Art and music teachers were on hand to review student portfolios.
At Cheshire, college counselors guide students through every facet of the college search process, including researching schools, registering and preparing for standardized tests, visiting college campuses, and meeting with the hundreds of college representatives who visit the Academy. Counselors offer critical review of application essays and help students navigate acceptance letters and financial aid offers. Students meet one-on-one and in small groups with their counselors, benefiting from personalized guidance.
During the day international students met with advisors about applying to American and international universities. Even ninth graders had a fun field trip to celebrate the day.
“College Workshop Day is one of my favorite events,” Bergstrom said. “It’s a busy day, but so worth it.”
