Lift Every Voice 

Chill winds did nothing to lessen the warmth of Cheshire Academy’s annual Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice Community Weekend, a celebration of the values that make the international school a welcoming place for all.  

“It was heartwarming to see our students, faculty, and staff share stories, read poetry, perform songs, and work on a school time capsule – all celebrating our global community and how much we value each individual student here at Cheshire Academy,” said Head of School Tom Woelper, who has been celebrating his first all-Community Weekends with the school this year. 

Coordinated by teachers Allissa Robinson and Ana Henriquez, along with a group of dedicated student-interns, the weekend kicked off Friday morning with a memorable performance by Nzinga’s Daughters, a women’s performance ensemble fostering an appreciation of a multicultural society. Students, staff, and faculty participated in the opening event, offering personal reflections, poetry, and a rousing reading of selections from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” 

On Saturday morning, students practiced sound healing and African drumming, created heart-shaped pendants made from gun barrel parts for Swords to Plowshares (“Veterans Helping Veterans”) and learned about food insecurity. Others went on a museum trip or lent their opinions to small group conversations on breaking barriers, tackling racism in sports, and more. 

CA’s Community Weekends transcend the traditional academic experience and contribute to the development of a stronger, more connected school environment. Required for both faculty and students, these enriching events bolster the core values that define Cheshire Academy: a sense of belonging, active engagement, collaborative spirit, and personal and collective growth.
