IB Students Applaud Actor John Jiang ’17 in NYC Play

Students attended Mandarin play, toured Museum of Chinese in America

Students in IB Theatre and IB Chinese Literature traveled to New York City in April to see former Cheshire Academy School President John Jiang ’17 perform in the world premiere of a Mandarin-language off-Broadway play and enjoy a guided tour of the Museum of Chinese in America.

Zihe Tian and Shall See Theater Company presented Of Ashes and Souls, a comedic horror story told entirely in Mandarin with English supertitles using the framework of a traditional Chinese Zhongyuan “Hungry Ghost” Festival at The Flea Theater.

Jiang’s performance also drew three Cheshire Academy alumni – Jingyi “Jenny” Li ’20, Zhenyi “Jenny” Sheng ’20, and Xiangyu “Simon” Yan ’20 – creating an impromptu reunion with teachers Jen Guarino P’18, Maggie Guarino-Trier ’18, Yvonne Hewu, Patrick Laffin, and Laura Longacre.

After touring the museum, where students learned about significant events and people who shaped the history of the Chinese in America, the group enjoyed some delicious food in Chinatown.

“The museum was small but incredibly impactful, and the show was fascinating with a great twist at the end,” Hewu said.
