The Kevin Slaughter Memorial Athletic Hall of Fame
In the spring of 1986, Kevin Dennis Slaughter, soccer coach, dorm parent, and math teacher at Cheshire Academy, brought the concept of an Athletic Hall of Fame to the Alumni Office. An avid proponent of the benefits of athletics in a young person’s life, he was very impressed with the rich athletic history at the Academy. Kevin served as chairman of the committee to design the Hall of Fame’s criteria and started research on prospective members. Tragically, in August of that year, he drowned in a scuba diving accident. Shortly thereafter, it was decided to name the Hall of Fame in the memory of this special young educator.

James Van Der Beek '95
James Van Der Beek ’95 (1977–2026) was an alumnus of Cheshire Academy and a recipient of the prestigious Cheshire Town Scholar award in 1991. As a student, he demonstrated remarkable drive and discipline — commuting to Manhattan for theater rehearsals after classes and returning late at night to complete his schoolwork — all while graduating second in his class.
Van Der Beek rose to international fame with his starring role as Dawson Leery in Dawson’s Creek (1998–2003) and his memorable portrayal of quarterback “Mox” Moxon in Varsity Blues (1999), going on to earn critical praise for his self-satirizing turn in Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23. His career began while still a CA student, with a New York Times-lauded performance in Edward Albee’s Finding the Sun on the New York City stage.
Van Der Beek remained deeply connected to Cheshire Academy throughout his life, returning to campus in 2017 to work with theater students and address the student body, and delivering a virtual address to the Class of 2020. Prior to his passing, he had accepted an invitation to be inducted into the Academy’s D. Robert Gardiner Arts & Letters Alumni Hall of Fame — an honor to be bestowed posthumously during Reunion 2026.

David Jepson '59
David Jepson, a member of the Cheshire Academy class of 1959, is being posthumously awarded the Cheshire Academy Distinguished Alumni Service Award after a lifetime of service and care to CA. As a student at Cheshire Academy, David was a member of the fencing and tennis teams, as well as the yearbook staff. David, a renowned architect and member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects, was a principal and founder at JCJ Architecture, a firm with offices around the country. Though David retired in 2011, he was still an instrumental member of the firm, helping guide the transition into a 100% employee-owned firm; a shift rooted in the firm’s culture of collaboration and transparency.
A true son of CA, David was an influential figure for many years within the Cheshire Academy community. Serving on the Board of Trustees from 2004-2019, and then continuing as a Trustee Emeritus until 2025, David played a crucial part in navigating the direction of Cheshire Academy for over 20 years. Along with his time commitments to CA, David was a loyal and generous benefactor of the institution, and was pivotal in imagining the modern iteration of this campus. Like Col. Ingram, David is also a member of the Harwood Society at Cheshire Academy.
