Dean of Academics Discusses ‘Grading What Matters’ on Education Podcast

Marc Aronson enters timely discussion of how grading measures learning, motivates students

Cheshire Academy’s Dean of Academics Marc Aronson appeared on “The Grading Podcast,” a national podcast reimagining grading as a tool for student success.

“The liberation that can be gained from throwing away the percentage-based scale as a mindset I think is something that people are on different stages of a journey toward,” he said, “and I’m going to do everything I can to help people move along in that journey.”

Sharona Krinsky and Robert Bosley, hosts of The Grading Podcast, are classroom educators dedicated to changing the way students are assessed in the classroom. They seek ways to use grading as a tool for measuring learning and offering encouragement, and their podcast delves into the many nuances of grading in both the K-12 and higher education classroom.

Krinsky and Bosley’s wide-ranging discussion with Aronson included innovative ways of approaching honors classes, using authentic assessments in final demonstrations of learning (FDOLs), and finding ways to use the external motivation of grades to measure things beyond discipline content and practices.
