Bass-Riccio discusses Salt House, the out-of-print 1934 novel transcribed by Cheshire Academy students
Allison Bass-Riccio, Cheshire Academy dean of curriculum and faculty development and champion of Provincetown author Hazel Hawthorne, discussed this “Queen of the Dunes” on “Lost Ladies of Lit,” a national podcast whose guests have included New York Times book critic Sadie Stein and Academy Award-winner Peter Davis.
Bass-Riccio, also the Writing Center coordinator at the Academy, spoke alongside Provincetown Arts Press publisher Livia Tenzer regarding Hawthorne’s evocative tale and how it was unearthed and re-published. This all occurred thanks to Bass-Riccio and her “Hazel interns,” who studied and painstakingly transcribed the novel. The CA students, who have worked on the project for more than two years, have presented their work on the book and Hawthorne’s archives at a college conference and in Provincetown.
Bass-Riccio, CA’s first dean of curriculum and faculty development, is earning her MFA in creative writing at Southern Connecticut State University. Work on the “Hazel Project” continues this year at Cheshire Academy.
