Former Cheshire Academy QB Reno Talks to NY Times on Yale Move

Quarterback Dante Reno ’24, who led the Cheshire Cats to a league championship in 2023, was interviewed by the New York Times about his decision to play football at Yale University, where his dad, Tony Reno, is head coach.

The announcement made sports news across the country, with stories about the novel father-son arrangement in the Times, Sports Illustrated, 247 Sports, and many other media outlets. Cheshire’s current QB, Keegan Croucher ’27, is also getting heavy media attention with 17 college commitment offers.

Dante Reno was a standout at CA, where he went 159-for-248 passing and posted 20 touchdowns as a senior. He was an Under Armour All-American and competed in the Elite 11 Finals before heading to USC. Once there, he backed up QB LaNorris Sellers, a Heisman Trophy hopeful, and redshirted, meaning he has four years of eligibility.

The elder Reno has coached at Yale since 2012, with a 74-46 record and four Ivy League titles in the past seven seasons.

Dante Reno told the New York Times he’s excited about reconnecting with several of his CA teammates in the area, being closer to his Massachusetts home, and having the opportunity to compete in the FCS playoffs, something that was not possible for the Ivy League until a few months ago.

He’s also looking forward to playing for his dad, who hasn’t coached his son since he was playing second-grade baseball and basketball.

“He’s a defensive guy, so it’s gonna be a little interesting sometimes,” said Dante, who, as a quarterback, plays on the offensive squad. “But I think it’ll be very fun, and we both want to win, so that’s really what matters.”
