Father-Daughter Duo Makes History at Cheshire Academy

Basketball star De’Naya Rippey repeats dad’s record of 1,000 points.

Senior De’Naya Rippey hit a significant milestone during her final season as a Cheshire Academy Cats varsity girls’ basketball player, achieving 1,000 points in her high school career. And this honor holds extra special meaning for her.

Rippey follows in her father’s footsteps at Cheshire Academy. A member of the Class of 1993, her father, Deron Rippey, also scored 1,000 points in his time at CA. “My dad and I are the first father-and-daughter duo to score 1,000 points [at Cheshire Academy],” she said. “We were able to do what people from our community hoped we would do, and it means a lot.” While the Academy was not able to confirm if this is a first in the state or nation, it is certainly history-making at Cheshire Academy.

A Brooklyn, New York, native, Rippey joined Cheshire Academy as a 10th-grade student. Since then, she has made a name for herself as a top basketball player. “Surpassing 1,000 points in my high school basketball career is a huge accomplishment for me,” Rippey said. “I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to come to Cheshire Academy and have this type of success on and off the court. I wouldn’t be here without the help from my parents, teammates, and coaches that have been on this journey with me since I first came to CA as a sophomore.”

Off the court, Rippey is fully immersed in the Cheshire Academy experience. A boarding student, she is a member of the Black Girl Coalition, Black Student Union, and is a student ambassador. She is also a three-season varsity athlete, playing volleyball in the fall and track and field in the spring.
