Wilfredo Aybar ’22 continues to make a name for himself both on and off the field, this time for being named the Gatorade Connecticut Football Player of the Year.
Now in its 36th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, the award honors the nation’s best high school student-athletes who demonstrate outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement, and exemplary character both on and off the field. Aybar is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award, which will be announced this month.

Aybar joins former CA Cat Alexis Holmes ’18, who was named the 2017-18 Gatorade Connecticut Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
Associate Head of School and Varsity Football Head Coach David Dykeman said, “This award exemplifies all that we strive for here at Cheshire Academy. We are so proud of Wilfredo. Not only does it recognize his incredible playing ability, but it also represents his character and accomplishments in the classroom.”
A 6-foot-4, 240-pound defensive end, Aybar recorded 39 tackles and four sacks in the Cats’ three-game fall football season. Aybar currently has 26 scholarship offers from high-major Division I programs, including Stanford, Ohio State, and Notre Dame. He’s ranked the No. 6 defensive end on the country via Rivals, is the No. 112 recruit in the Class of 2022 by ESPN, and was recently highlighted by the Hartford Courant newspaper for his aspirations to play in the NFL, pursue a degree in physics or engineering, and work for NASA.
