Varsity girls’ soccer ready for another successful year
August 14, 2023
Coming off an undefeated regular season last year, the varsity girls’ soccer team is looking to make it further into the playoffs this year — and they have the team to do it.
While preseason begins at the end of August, student-athletes have been getting together for informal workouts led by captain Olivia Greene ’24 and communicating with one another in anticipation for their return to campus, according to Head Coach Andrei Popescu.
“The girls have been active,” Popescu said. “I’m looking forward to the preseason, which is going to be intense.”
Popescu recognized that a void was left by the Class of 2023, as many 12th graders and postgraduates graduated in the spring. Several returning players — McGuire Avitable ’26, Rachel Ballard ’24, Danica Furst ’24, Izzy Medeiros ’25, and Greene, to name a few — will now step up to fill those empty spots with the support of a few talented newcomers, including Cali-Dean Craft ’26, Ava Delgado-Bozeman ’27, and Sienna Liebler ’27.
Replicating last year’s undefeated season will be difficult, Popescu admitted, but he is optimistic that CA will make it further into the playoffs this fall. And he’s ready to help the student-athletes improve their skills and make it to the collegiate level.
“I’m looking forward to getting the girls back to train and to start our season,” he said. “We want to do our best and help as many of them as possible to elevate their game. We would love to see as many of our students as possible playing in college.”
