Torres named 2022 Town Scholar

March 10, 2022

Cecilia Torres and her family were greeted with a “Congratulations,” cheers, balloons, and a gift bag from Head of School Julie Anderson P’19,’23, the Cheshire Academy Admission team, and other members of the CA community when they visited campus on March 9.

Torres was invited to campus to be officially named the 2022 Town Scholar, earning her a full four-year scholarship to Cheshire Academy. Originating in 1938, the Town Scholarship provides one eighth-grade Cheshire resident with the opportunity to attend Cheshire Academy throughout their high school career.

Torres became emotional after being informed of her award. Her family, too, shared in her happiness.

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must submit an essay explaining why they should be named the town scholar, among other requirements. Torres formed her essay as a short story, reflecting on her being the oldest of three children growing up in a multigenerational and multicultural home. This upbringing, she wrote, “was the driving force behind all of Cecilia’s future endeavors.”

Torres has danced since she was 2 years old, and enjoys the intensity and speed of playing basketball and volleyball. Her drive to succeed is apparent not only in athletics, but academics as well, proven by her being named a member of the National Junior Honor Society, earning distinguished honors during her middle school career, and organizing fundraisers both in and outside of school.

“I have known since fifth grade that I want a secondary school experience that suits my work ethic and level of commitment, and also provides a unique, multicultural atmosphere like that of my childhood,” Torres wrote.

Torres will officially join the CA community this fall as a member of the Class of 2026.
