The Cats made their mark as top contenders for the postseason with a statement season opening win over #2 Brunswick Academy. With this match being their Cheshire Academy debut for transfers such as quarterback Dante Reno ’24 and wide receiver Teriq “Magic” Mallory ’25, they were sure to set the tone early on.

The Cats’ offense was detrimental to their success. Heading into halftime, the Cats were up by 13 after multiple long throws from Reno to his slate of talented receivers in the second quarter. Mallory was at the end of two touchdowns with each of them being at least 40 yards. Tight end Luke Reynolds ’24 added the third touchdown from 28 yards out. Brunswick could not respond back until late in the second quarter.

The Cats’ defense was the key in the second half, picking multiple interceptions and recoveries in the final moments. The Cats started the half with an interception right off Brunswick’s opening drive, courtesy of Chris White ’24. However, Brunswick managed to grab another touchdown with 5:40 left to go in the 4th quarter, bringing the score to 20-14. The Cats needed their defense and that’s exactly what happened. Nearing a possible Brunswick comeback, defensive end Garret Reardon ’24 recovered a fumble and puts the Cats on offense with less than 2:00 minutes to go. This play sealed the deal for the Cats as #25 Cheshire Academy stunned #2 Brunswick in a 20-14 win at home.

“I feel great,” Reno said, postgame after the big win. “Obviously I’ve got guys like Magic and Luke to throw to, but that was a great team win and I’m super excited for the future with these guys.”

The Cats head up north to New Hampshire on Saturday, Sept. 23, to face Phillips Exeter Academy.
