Corey Holton to head varsity girls’ soccer program

May 18, 2021

Longtime collegiate soccer coach Corey Holton will be leading the varsity girls’ soccer team at Cheshire Academy starting this upcoming fall season.

Holton, who is currently head coach of Vassar College’s women’s soccer program, will be joining Cheshire Academy starting on July 1. She has been coaching soccer for the past 16 years both at the college and youth levels, including as head coach at NCAA Division III institutions Concordia University Texas, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Vassar. She also served as an assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame, a Division I college.

At Vassar, Holton has accumulated a 56-43-11 overall record, while going 27-16-7 in Liberty League play. Under her guidance, the team made the NCAA tournament in 2018 for the first time in program history and earned its first ever top 25 national ranking. They reached the Liberty League tournament five out of the six seasons at Vassar and made it to the championship twice.

At CA, Holton is eager to bring her experience to benefit the program. “I am most excited about the potential and room for growth in the girls’ soccer program. I believe in the mission of Cheshire Academy, and I am looking forward to developing high school girls on the field and preparing them for college.”

Incoming Athletic Director Jim McCarthy said, “We’re thrilled to welcome someone of Corey’s caliber to lead our girls’ soccer program. She has extensive collegiate experience and has built successful programs at each of her stops along the way. She will be a tremendous resource and role model for our student-athletes, and a wonderful addition to the Cheshire Academy community.”

Holton is originally from southern Vermont, where she played soccer in high school. During her time there, the team won three state championships—something she looks back on as a coach today. “I was fortunate to have great coaches at the youth and high school levels, and I want to provide the same experience for the girls at CA. While I have enjoyed my time as a college coach, I feel as though I can use my experience to influence a younger generation and build a strong foundation for their future success.”

After high school, Holton earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Elmira College, and later received her master’s degree in sports studies from High Point University. She also holds the United Soccer Coaches Advanced National Diploma.

Beyond her role as head soccer coach, Holton will be working as an admission associate in the Admission Office.
