Award-winning author and editor kicked off Earth Day celebration

April 5, 2021

The Cheshire Academy community came together both in person and virtually on April 21 for the school’s third annual full-day Earth Day Celebration, titled “When the World Works Together.”

As part of the event, Bijal Vachharajani, an award-winning author and editor, spoke with students, faculty, and staff about environmental work taking place in India, the intersection of her dual passions of writing and sustainability, as well as ways that members of the CA community can engage in climate work.

Following Vachharajani’s discussion, students attended in-person and virtual workshops, including a virtual learning experience from the Philippines on environmental work with indigenous communities, an in-person, student-led compost workshop, and a trip to a local farm.

Bijal is author of “A Cloud Called Bhura: Climate Champions to the Rescue,” which won the AutHer Children’s Book Award 2020, as well as “So You Want to Know About the Environment,” and co-authored “10 Indian Champions Who Are Fighting to Save the Planet” and “The Great Indian Nature Trail with Uncle Bikky.” Vachharajani has a master’s degree in environment security and peace.
